Pakistan: Attack on Lahore Police Station Kills Up to 60

Latest Post: Mehsud Claims Responsibility for Lahore Attack; 18 Dead

UPDATE (3:10 p.m. BST/7:10 p.m. Lahore): Dawn is quoting Pakistani security sources that eight attackers were killed, including two who blew themselves up, and six detained. Geo News is saying four attackers killed and four detained, with eight policemen "martyred" and 95 wounded. Military spokesman is also telling CNN eight security personnel killed; previous statement of 30 people killed is being blamed on "wrong information".

UPDATE (12:30 p.m. BST/4:30 p.m. Lahore): There is still confusion in press accounts. The Pakistan newspaper Dawn is reporting, "The police have overpowered the gunmen and the operation has concluded", but "official confirmations of the development are...awaited". It puts the death toll at "only" 13 although "it is likely to rise".

Al Jazeera is reporting up to 50 dead, with security sources saying at least four gunmen killed and six seized. The Daily Telegraph in Britain is citing reports of 60 dead from Pakistani television stations, with police statements of 92 wounded. About 25 gunmen were involved in the attack.

UPDATE (12.15pm BST/4.15pm Lahore): Reports suggest that Pakistani security forces have retaken the training centre, arresting at least one suspect. CNN says that at least 10 are dead, with local media reporting the number of dead as high as 25. The BBC, however, says there could be 40 dead.

Morning Update: A gun battle is continuing in Lahore between Pakistani security forces and attackers who invaded a police training centre Monday, throwing grenades and firing at officers taking morning roll call.

The attack killed 20 and wounded 25. Pakistani Rangers and police, supported by the Army and helicopters, have taken up positions around the centre.

If America is still a superpower, take those nuclear weapons far away from Pakistan. They never deserved it, and now they are proving everyday that they are unworthy of keeping it. Those deadly weapons at the hands of this failing nation can cause a holocaust which human race is in no position to withstand.

Besides America, there used to be one more superpower namely USSR few decades ago, which invaded a tiny 20 million muslim country (Afghanistan), then perhaps the most backward nation in the world. After the self-prescribed and quite deserved demise of the USSR - certainly courtesy the grand US-led Western Strategy and material support, coupled with the most pivotal, decisive and defining role courageously carried out by Pakistan and enormous sacrifices of the Afghans - America has become the single, sole superpower of the world - politically speaking. It is thus, the acts and deeds of the White House occupant not only directly affect the American people, but billions other beyond their shores.

The havoc wreaked particularly on the Middle East for several years by the Republicans' Bush Administrations besides assaulting, assailing and torching American's precious assets (its political power and its priceless planetary prestige) needs obviously no further description.

These couple of miserable failures (Economy & Foreign Policy) caused the Republicans their most merited relegation to a Minority party despite staying at the helms of affairs for eight long years, and their consequent eviction in disgrace of the White House occupancy. This is why the Democrats' Agenda with the "Change" theme, clinched them their due massive mandate of the American nation, to reign and run all their planetary affairs and Obama administration is utmost efficiently and actively busy executing its Agenda. Not only the Americans are overwhelmingly optimistic about the Obama administration, but billions other dwelling beyond their borders are cheerful and confident about the Democrats' positive approach and accomplishments.

President Obama is exceptionally lucky to have Hillary Clinton available to him, whose first Foreign Policy Conquest succinctly mentioned below speaks volumes about her uncommon vision and rare competence.

Something considerably consequential had arisen, when President Obama during his Inaugural Address spoke of how earlier generation of Americans had "faced down Facism and Communism". The China's state broadcaster had quickly faded out the audio of its live broadcast, camera cutting back to a flustered studio anchor. This though to this scribe was an obvious instant individual act and does not merit to be taken as China's considered response. Obama can not be expected to even contemplate resorting to confronting China at that stage of his administration. This thought, however, could have been expressed ensuring exclusion of China. Then Timothy Geithner perhaps two days after this, wrote that Obama believes China is "manipulating its currency which American manufacturers say Beijing does to make its goods cheaper for US consumers and American products expensive in China. And Hillary Clinton, after taking over as Secretary of State expunged its antagonistic reflections, if any through her short but striking single line statement -- "No nation is more important to the United States than China." Yang Jiechi, the Chinese Foreign Minister's statement -- "Beijing was committed to working with the Obama Administration to strengthen ties and cooperation" ratifies the First Foreign Policy Conquest of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.

The entire world has witnessed Hillary' SPEAKING with her rare ingenuity, through LISTENING, and her listening too, is LISTENED TO - yet intently and ingratiatingly - and Pakistanis pointedly witnessed it a fortnight ago which considerably helped them have their constitutionally legitimate Independent Judiciary restored with its Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, who pioneered and fathered this sacred Movement in the country's 61 years' history and has earned the merited reverence only surpassed by Quaid-e-Azam, the founding Father of the nation. This factor alone is potent enough to set every significant sector on the right track in Pakistan, the only nuclear country in the 1.7 billion Muslim World.

An ideally equipped Obama Administration knows it fully well what the continuity of the failed Bush policies (no matter superimposed under any banner) would result into.

I am not blaming the intention behind war on terror; I am not blaming Afghan war, I am not blaming US management blunders, I am not blaming world leaders not conveying US properly that this war has got the whole world in chaos, I am not blaming CIA, FBI for their misinformation, I am not blaming any one.

Pakistani forces were good enough to recapture the Academy in eight hours. Neither war on terror is of any concern to me nor is the achievement of Pakistani forces recapturing academy. The only concern I have is the policeman and cadets died in this operation or in any operation.

Right now I think the only option we have is engaging with those extremists other than engaging in war. I know and understand that they are not the people we should talk to but Guerrilla warfare is difficult to tackle. Therefore, it is highly recommended we talk to them and bring them down. The time has come that we as World should come together for change.

Let’s sacrifice for each other, let’s enjoy the world brotherhood. Average life is 50-60 years; why live in hell lets make this world a better place for coming generations. I don’t want the coming generations to blame us, the way I blame my previous generations. It is time for change, real change in real term. CHANGE is what we need.

What Muhammad Obaidullah has said above merits to be vehemently vouched for. Those actually at the helms of these affairs can only be earnestly urged to act realistically without any prejudice or preconception, and appropriate to their proclaimed planetary stature and standing, aimed at ensuring real peace, progress and prosperity around the world.
