The Latest from Iran (29 April): "We Will Destroy You"

1340 GMT: Your Tehran Friday Prayer Summary (Ahmadinejad Watch Edition). Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami takes the podium and has a straightforward message: "Enemies want to convey that there are differences in Iran, and media who follow them inflame the situation."

Khatami made no direct reference to the dispute over President Ahmadinejad's forced "resignation", later rescinded by the Supreme Leader. of Minister of Intelligence Heydar Moslehi (see separate analysis).

However, Khatami had this message: "The President should know that the majority vote for him was not absolute but conditional on his obedience towards the orders by the Supreme Leadership. The top of the system is the constitution, which has clarified the power structure."

1320 GMT: Economy Watch. The head of the Central Bank, Mahmoud Bahmani, has predicted a rise in the inflation rate to 13.5% by the end of April.

The Central Bank had raised its projection of inflation last month to 12.4%, but Bahmani said that the further rise was "not serious".

1142 GMT: Clerical Intervention. Ayatollah Javadi Amoli has declared that those who specify a date for the appearance of the Hidden Imam, Shi'a's 12th Imam, are "today's shysters".

Officials close to President Ahmadinejad, including advisor Esfandiar Rahim-Mashai, have been associated with the movement promoting the imminent return of the Hidden Imam.

1140 GMT: The "Right" Information on the Middle East. The Supreme Leader's office has announced the establishment of a special page on the Khamenei website to cover the "Islamic Awakening".

1130 GMT: The House Arrests. Fatemeh Karroubi has been returned to strict house arrest, re-joining her husband Mehdi Karroubi, after she was let out for a few days for medical treatment.

The Karroubis were detained, as were Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard, in their residences in mid-February.

1110 GMT: An Attack on Ahmadinejad. The conservative site Aftab has launched a broadside against the President this morning through a series of articles.

Most provocative is the site's claim of an admission from the current head of State news agency (and former Ahmadinejad advisor) Ali Akbar Javanfekr: the President is depressed, saying he has been accused of opposing the Supreme Leader and the Islamic Revolution. 

Then there is the report that a pro-Ahmadinejad website is putting out the message, "Which betrayals will Ahmadinejad reveal?"

And, on the economic front, there is this question to the President:  Where is the $100 Billion in currency reserves that ou were talking about six months ago?

0500 GMT: Still no sign of President Ahmadinejad, more than a week after he "disappeared" following the Supreme Letter's intervention on behalf of the Ministry of Intelligence, but a group of his supporters made a forceful intervention on Thursday. The journalists and bloggers in Fars Province said they would "destroy" the anti-Government movement.

This threat does not make the pages of the pro-Ahmadinejad state agency IRNA. Indeed, there is no reference at all to the President and the current conflict. The lead story instead is about a statement from the commander in charge of "Passive Defence" --- or "soft war" --- who declares that the US economic campaign against Tehran has failed.
